AFC Cup: Al Shorta 2 Al Qadsia 2 (2-2 agg)

24 September 2013 22:20

Al Qadsia sealed their AFC Cup semi-final spot on away goals as they drew 2-2 with Al Shorta in Beirut on Tuesday.

The Kuwaiti side, who extended their unbeaten run to 20 games with the draw, were forced to weather a late fightback from their hosts, but ultimately a first-half brace from Sultan Al Enezi gave them their place in the last four.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Shorta may have felt they held a slight advantage heading into the home return, but they soon had a mountain to climb as two goals in four first-half minutes gave Al Qadsia the upper hand.

After 18 minutes Al Enezi headed home from a corner to open the scoring.

The midfielder then added to Shorta’s misery with a second from the penalty spot soon afterwards, while the hosts' hopes were further hit when Abdulkader Dakka fell awkwardly following an aerial challenge and suffered a serious injury.

It was later confirmed that the defender had swallowed his tongue and was rushed to hospital.

That seemed to overshadow the match but Shorta came out a different side after the break, and they were soon rewarded when Ahmad Al Doni fired home.

The 24-year-old showed plenty of skill as he controlled the ball before smashing a volley home.

With just 10 minutes to go Gilson Tussi Junior connected with a corner to level the match, but the hosts could not find the vital third to claim overall victory.

The result gives Al Qadsia a chance to go one better than their previous best finish in the tournament, having finished as runners-up in 2010.

They will come up against Al Faisaly in the semi-finals next Monday.
