PSG under pressure in Europe, says Thiago Silva

6 September 2013 22:11

Thiago Silva knows Paris Saint-Germain are under pressure to be successful in Europe following their domestic triumph last term.

The Brazil international joined PSG from Milan in July 2012 and quickly established himself as an integral figure as the French capital club secured the Ligue 1 title and reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Silva rejected an offer from Barcelona in order to join the Parc des Princes outfit, and reportedly turned down a second approach from the Spanish champions in the most recent transfer window.

The 28-year-old admitted it was not easy to reject the Catalan giants, but feels his choice has been vindicated by the progress PSG have made.

"It was a difficult decision to say no twice to Barcelona. It was never a secret that I have admired them since I was a kid and that I always wished I could play for Barcelona," he told the Guardian.

"But life is made of hard decisions that sometimes go against what you dream of.

"I heard people saying I was just thinking of the money, but they forget we have families to feed. Why would I accept to earn less money to play for Barcelona? Besides, PSG offered me also an opportunity for a new challenge and the club are trailing the right path."

It was Barcelona who ended PSG's hopes in the Champions League last term as they progressed on away goals, and Silva is well aware that Laurent Blanc's men will be expected to improve on that showing after bringing in Edinson Cavani from Napoli in the transfer window.

"That (the game against Barcelona) showed the players and the supporters we didn't have to fear anybody," he added.

"But of course people will immediately see a problem if we don't go at least a step further this year.

"The president (Nasser Al-Khelaifi) dreams of winning the Champions League and I feel we have do to better than last season as part of the process. People are aware of the investments made by the club."
