Fulham win vital, says Ben Arfa

3 September 2013 14:34

Newcastle United's 1-0 win over Fulham avoided a frustrating international break at St James' Park, according to Hatem Ben Arfa.

The Frenchman scored the winner in Saturday's match, ensuring the first goal and first win of the season for Alan Pardew's men.

Ben Arfa admits there would have been tension around the club during international week, were it not for his 85th-minute strike, with fans on Tyneside unhappy with a perceived lack of transfer activity in the window, which slammed shut on Monday.

"If we'd drawn 0-0, I think we'd have not been sleeping because it would have been very frustrating," he told the club's official website.

"But everybody in Newcastle is very happy because everybody waited for a win - and we won."

Newcastle will go into their next Premier League fixture against Aston Villa without any further reinforcements to their squad, having not added to their loan capture of Loic Remy before the transfer deadline.

However, Ben Arfa believes the current squad can build on their win against Martin Jol's men.

"Now we have two weeks and we can work very hard, with confidence, with serenity," he added.
