Rodgers hails battling Liverpool

19 October 2013 16:50

Brendan Rodgers praised Liverpool's character after they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Newcastle at St James' Park on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard netted his 100th Premier League goal as he levelled Yohan Cabaye's stunning opener with a penalty just before half-time, before Daniel Sturridge equalised Paul Dummett's goal 18 minutes from time to give the visitors a point.

Despite the fact Liverpool failed to pick up three points after playing against 10 men for the majority of the game - Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for the foul on Luis Suarez that resulted in Gerrard's penalty - Rodgers was satisfied with his side's showing.

"We played very well," he told BT Sport. "It's never easy when you play against 10 men but I thought some of our play was outstanding.

"We had to show character today, coming from being behind twice.

"Credit to Newcastle, once they got the second goal they sat in and made it very difficult for us, but some of our play as outstanding and the combinations in our game was very good.

"A point at St James' Park won't be the worst result you can get."

The 40-year-old also praised Gerrard for becoming the 24th player to reach a century of Premier League goals, and hailed his skipper's overall influence on the team.

"It's a huge pleasure (to work with him)," the Northern Irishman added.

"He gets a lot of praise for his captaincy, but what people sometimes forget is that he's a world-class player. At 33, he's so professional and you see some of his quality today.

"He's always right on the money, a wonderful man and a great player."
