Moyes calm on Januzaj future

19 October 2013 10:54

David Moyes expects Adnan Januzaj to sign a new contract at Manchester United sooner rather than later.

Speculation over the future of the Belgian-born youngster has been rife since he burst onto the scene with a match-winning double against Sunderland in his first Premier League start earlier this month.

Januzaj's contract expires at the end of the season, with the likes of Juventus and Barcelona rumoured to be monitoring his situation with a view to luring him away from Old Trafford.

However, United boss Moyes does not believe the 18-year-old will feel the need to leave the Premier League champions.

"I want to get it done and the club do too," the Scot said when asked about the prospect of Januzaj penning a new long-term deal.

"I'm confident because he is 18-years-old and playing for United. I don't know where else you would really want to play.

"I can’t think of a better place in the world to play if you are a young player.

"You have already broken into the team, you’re in and around the first team. Hopefully that will all be sorted."

Moyes went on to say Januzaj is comparable to some of the best young talents he has come across throughout his playing and managerial career - including his United team-mate Wayne Rooney, who Moyes brought through as a 16-year-old at Everton.

"I can only really judge him by some of the people I have seen over my career, who I would say were top young players," he added.

"Charlie Nicholas was one, when I was being brought through at Celtic, Paul McStay … obviously Wayne Rooney. Ross Barkley too.

"I would have have to say Adnan would be in that category. He certainly wouldn’t be out of place among those names, as an 18-year-old footballer."
