Rodgers salutes Gerrard as he targets 100th Premier League goal

18 October 2013 10:10

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has backed captain Steven Gerrard to play at the top level for years to come.

Gerrard, who scored in England's 2-0 FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Poland on Tuesday as Roy Hodgson's men booked their place in Brazil next year, is just one Premier League goal away from reaching 100 for Liverpool.

At 33, Gerrard is entering the twilight years of his career.

However, Rodgers does not believe the midfielder is showing any signs of slowing down and feels he can continue to act as a role model for younger players, both at the club and for his national team.

"He's so professional, the way he looks after himself, I think he's still got a number of seasons to look forward to," Rodgers said.

"He's a wonderful ambassador for England and for the game. He doesn't say a great deal but, when he does, all the players listen whether they are juniors or seniors.

"He is at the stage of his career where everybody looks up to him. Jack Wilshere is bound to learn from him and so are all the other boys in the England squad."

Gerrard will hope to reach the 100-goal milestone against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday, a fixture Liverpool won 6-0 last season.

However, Rodgers is not anticipating a repeat of that scoreline against Alan Pardew's side.

"We won't go there too many times and win six-nil," the Liverpool manager said.

"We were outstanding in the fixture last season and we will be hoping to put in a similar performance."
