Gerrard ready for critical week

8 October 2013 09:55

Steven Gerrard is ready for a "critical" week as England look to secure their place at next year's FIFA World Cup finals.

Roy Hodgson's side have two games remaining in their qualifying group and know that victories in both games will guarantee their place at Brazil 2014.

Gerrard will lead his side against Montenegro on Friday before welcoming Poland to Wembley on Tuesday.

The England captain understands exactly what is at stake in the next seven days and he insists that the squad are ready to deliver.

"This is as critical a week as English football has known for a long time," he admitted. "There's a lot of expectations, from the fans, the media and in and among the group as well. Everyone wants to be at this World Cup.

"So it is very critical. We need to go out and deliver. It doesn't come much bigger than this.

"Also for the country itself it would be a disaster if England weren't in the World Cup, especially in Brazil.

"I don't like using the word 'disaster' or 'catastrophe', but the Brazil World Cup is going to be so big. Individually and collectively, we all want to be there."

Gerrard was part of the England side that failed to reach UEFA Euro 2008 and revealed that the pain from missing a major tournament has driven him to push even harder for international success.

"The pain and the agony, how long that lasted after we didn't qualify for Euro 2008, I wish you could bottle that and show it to people who say those things and doubt how much we care," he added.

"We care. Trust me, we care. No one cares more than the players.

"We understand the fans and media are passionate, but that's certainly the case in the dressing room.

"The main focus for me is trying to be as positive as I can, trying to be upbeat and look forward to trying to win these games rather than the worst-case scenarios."

Gerrard's 105 caps make him the fifth most capped player in England history and he will be hoping to add to his tally of 20 international goals.
