Alan Pardew was delighted to see his Newcastle United side bounce back by picking up a 2-1 win at Cardiff City on Saturday.
Loic Remy turned in a sensational first-half performance, scoring two goals to help fire his side to victory. The French striker broke the deadlock with a 20-yard strike after 30 minutes, before a superb side-footed finish doubled the advantage eight minutes later.
Peter Odemwingie pulled one back for the hosts in the second half, but it was not enough to prevent Cardiff falling to their seventh-straight defeat against Newcastle in all competitions.
Newcastle came into the game on the back of Monday's 3-2 defeat to Everton, in which they were three goals down at the break after a disastrous opening 45 minutes.
"I think it was an important win," said Pardew. "On Monday night we let ourselves down as a group, and we wanted to put that right today.
"I think the first half was as good as I've seen us play as Newcastle manager.
"Second half, we didn't play as well, but we showed at least a resilience that when the home team put pressure on us we can cope with it.
"I'm really pleased with how the whole group conducted themselves and how the players who got left out conducted themselves. It's been a good day for us"
Yohan Cabaye, who struck the post with an audacious 30-yard free-kick in the first half, was singled out for individual praise by his manager.
Pardew beamed: "I said to him in the showers that the first half was as good a performance as I've seen in a black and white shirt. He was really and truly at the top of his game.
"Second half, he had to work hard for the team and show a different side to his performance.
"I don't think he's at 100 per cent yet, which is a nice thought for us. I think he needs to play a few more games, but he battled hard and he's got two games for France and I think that's probably a good thing."
Pardew was also adamant his side should have been given a penalty late on, when Andrew Taylor handled in the area.
"It's a penalty. That kind of kills the game and reflects better on the scoreline. Our first-half display perhaps deserved a third goal."
Remy was withdrawn with 20 minutes left to play, but Pardew revealed it was just a precautionary measure.
"He had a sore ankle yesterday in training, so we decided to take him off so as not to irritate that."
