Bruce bemoans ´average´ Villa draw

5 October 2013 19:52

Steve Bruce conceded Hull City fell below the high standards they have set recently during Saturday’s goalless draw with Aston Villa.

Hull were unable to secure a third successive Premier League win in a game of few chances at the KC Stadium.

Their best chance came after 19 minutes when Danny Graham failed to find a decisive touch on Ahmed Elmohamady's inviting right-wing cross, but Bruce revealed he had all but given up on the prospect of a goal-laden encounter even at that early stage

In assessing the contest, he said. "It was bang average if we're being honest.

"It had 0-0 written all over it from the first five minutes and it never got any better.

"We have to give ourselves a kicking every now and again because we are disappointed. We've played really, really well in the last few weeks and today we haven't - simple as that. "

Nevertheless, Bruce refused to be overly critical of his players, who have confounded pre-season expectations to lie eighth with 11 points from seven matches.

Despite that lofty status, Bruce is well aware every single point could be very valuable to his newly promoted side when the campaign reaches its climax.

He added: "We still got something out of the game and you have to be delighted about that.

"You can't fault the effort of the commitment and even to get a 0-0 when we haven't played anywhere near the level we've been used to seeing recently is satisfying.

"There'll be time when we play badly and get nothing. We have to remind ourselves we're a newly promoted club.

"We're delighted to pick up a point and who knows that could just be the point that makes the difference to us."
