Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has declared his team's 3-1 UEFA Champions League win over Manchester City their best game of the season.
Guardiola's side sit second in the Bundesliga after seven rounds, just behind Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, but the former Barcelona boss has maintained through the first couple of months of the 2013-14 season that he expects more improvement from the reigning German and European champions.
Bayern had also opened their European title defence with a 3-0 win over CSKA Moscow and followed that with a strong victory away to City on Wednesday, which thrilled Guardiola.
"I think we dominated the game and dominated possession," Guardiola said.
"We were also very good at regaining the ball when we lost it, as well as switching play.
"Saturday we've got another difficult game in the Bundesliga (versus Bayer Leverkusen) but I must have that I'm very, very happy with today's performance."
Franck Ribery, Thomas Müller and Arjen Robben scored the goals for Bayern in the opening hour of the match before Alvaro Negredo pulled one back for City with 11 minutes remaining at the Etihad in Manchester.
The visitors from Bavaria had 20 shots to City's nine and had 66 per cent possession but Guardiola maintained Bayern can improve.
"A lot. A lot. In our set up play, it was a catastrophe, we have to improve that," the Spaniard, 42, said.
"We have to defend better from set plays, because they are very, very tall guys and good players who can make the actions.
"We have to defend very well in our zone defence.
"I'm so happy but, in the end, it's not the final of the Champions League, it's just the second game of our round, so we have to improve the players with little steps forward."
Bayern defender Dante hailed Guardiola's influence on the champions in the infancy of defending their three-peat effort last season.
"I think it was a superb result especially if you look at who we played against," Dante said.
"We played a very good game, very concentrated, very focused... (I) think that we are on a very good path with our new coach, he has brought in new ideas and we are very happy."
