Bayern can get better, warns Boateng

3 October 2013 11:13

Bayern Munich are determined to win the UEFA Champions league in even better style than they managed last term, according to Jerome Boateng.

The Bundesliga giants have made a fine start to the defence of their title and were in superb form on Wednesday as they eased past Manchester City 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

Bayern were dominant for the majority of the match, with a late rally from City and a stunning Alvaro Negredo goal not enough to answer efforts from Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.

And after opening their European campaign with a comfortable 3-0 triumph over CSKA Moscow and winning all but one of their domestic fixtures so far this term, Boateng - who was dismissed late in the win over City for a desperate lunge on Yaya Toure - has fired a warning that Bayern are looking to succeed in even better style under new manager Pep Guardiola.

"We had a great game today," the defender said. "We looked very strong.

"It is not easy to win here, 3-1 against a big club, so we can be happy.

"After last year of course it is difficult, but we want to do better. We have a new coach and he gave us a lot of confidence as you could see in the game.

"The coach has good tactics for us, we’re confident; everybody likes the ball and to play football."

Boateng was paired in defence against City with regular partner Dante, and the Brazilian echoed his team-mate's claims that the German champions are becoming more and more comfortable with Guardiola's system.

He said: "It was a very important win because we know Man City are a very strong team and to get a win here means we’re very close to qualifying and hopefully in first place.

"We’re adapting very well (under Guardiola), he's a great person, a great professional.

"He speaks good German after a short time, and we're all keen to continue evolving with his philosophy."
