Ferdinand out of Shakhtar clash

1 October 2013 20:41

Manchester United will be without Rio Ferdinand for their UEFA Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

The defender has not travelled with the rest of the squad for the Group A game in Ukraine due to a groin injury, although boss David Moyes has confirmed that he was always unlikely to play.

"I was never bringing Rio anyway but he has a slight groin problem, " Moyes explained. "It's nothing serious."

However, Moyes will be able to name Robin van Persie in the starting XI after the Dutch striker overcame a troublesome thigh problem.

Anderson, Fabio and Wilfried Zaha will all miss out, as the Scot looks for his side to bounce back from Saturday's 2-1 defeat against West Brom.

The former Everton boss won his first United game in Europe against Bayer Leverkusen 4-2, and he believes that winning the competition is achievable for the Premier League champions.

"Of course we'll try to win the Champions League," Moyes continued.

"That's part of the job at Manchester United and I'll do everything I can to try to make that happen."
