Moyes defends Young over ´dive´

6 November 2013 10:22

David Moyes has defended Ashley Young after the Manchester United winger was accused of diving to win a penalty against Real Sociedad.

The England international went down in the box following a challenge from Markel Bergara in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash, with Robin van Persie hitting the post from the subsequent spot-kick.

Young's actions were labelled "pathetic" by pundit Ray Wilkins, with the former United midfielder suggesting the 28-year-old had developed a reputation for going down too easily, but Moyes felt the ex-Aston Villa man had done nothing wrong.

"I've seen it and the boy certainly tugs him in the box," the Old Trafford boss said.

"The referee is two yards away from it and decides to give it. All I know is he got a penalty kick from a decision; I don't know about his reputation, but the referee is there and he gave it.

"The referee made decisions all night. He's the one who saw fit to award a penalty and send a player (Mourane Fellaini) off."

Wilkins, who made almost 200 appearances for United, was unequivocal in his assessment, offered post-match to Sky Sports.

He said: "This is pathetic. This is as bad for me as all these over-the-top tackles we're getting at the moment because that is a conning of the referee.

"I just wish Ashley would cut this out because he's a good player but he's getting a bad name."

In September, Moyes highlighted his dislike for diving after Young was booked for simulation in the 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace.

"I've always said I don't like diving," he said afterwards. "He deserved to get booked. I don't want any of my players diving, I don't want anybody doing it."
