International Friendly Preview: Mexico v Nigeria

29 May 2013 10:57

Mexico will be looking to end a streak of five consecutive draws when they face Nigeria at Houston's Reliant Stadium in Friday's friendly.

Jose Manuel de la Torre's team have not won since they defeated El Salvador 2-0 in October and with three World Cup qualifiers coming up in June, they need to find some winning form against Nigeria.

Mexico have claimed just three points from as many matches in the final round of CONCACAF's qualification system for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and sit fifth out of six countries, in danger of missing out on next year's tournament.

In their past four international games, Mexico have been held scoreless three times and their head coach, De La Torre, must find a solution in front of goal against Nigeria.

Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez will be crucial, having scored two of Mexico's three goals this year but the Mexicans need to provide more support for the 24-year-old.

Hernandez's record of 30 goals in 46 internationals is impressive but De La Torre's squad for the upcoming friendly, World Cup qualifiers and Confederations Cup otherwise lacks goalscorers.

Only Giovani dos Santos (14 goals in 62 games), Andres Guardado (14 in 90) and Carlos Salcido (10 in 109) have reached double figures for international goals, so De La Torre will undoubtedly be hoping Monterrey's Aldo de Nigris or Club America's Raul Jimenez can break through against Nigeria and show they deserve more of a run in the World Cup qualifiers versus Jamaica, Panama and Costa Rica.

Nigeria should provide a tough test for Mexico in Texas on Friday having not lost in 15 matches.

In Africa's World Cup qualifying, Nigeria sit top of Group F ahead of Malawi, Namibia and Kenya and will be hoping their friendly against Mexico can set them up for two qualifiers in June and the Confederations Cup.

Nigeria will travel to Kenya and Namibia following their friendly in Texas before flying to Brazil for their Confederations Cup opener against Tahiti on June 17 and head coach Stephen Keshi also seems unsure about his forward structure having picked eight strikers in a squad of 30 for the next month.

Keshi has included three uncapped forwards (Mohammed Gambo, Gomo Onduku and Anthony Ujah) alongside more recognised strikers like Ideye Brown of Dynamo Kiev and Chelsea's Victor Moses.
