Robben relieved to net winner

26 May 2013 02:39

Arjen Robben has spoken of his relief at scoring the winning goal as Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Champions League final.

The attacking midfielder, who missed a penalty in extra-time as Bayern lost to Chelsea in last season's final, described the emotional moment he beat Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller to win the game on Saturday with just minutes remaining.

"The feeling is unbelievable, I can't describe what is going through my mind, it's too difficult, there's so many emotions," he said.

"When I got the ball, I was free and I was anticipating on Franck's (Ribery) move. My only hope was that he left the ball there, in the space, or a little bit back, but leave the ball there because I saw the space.

"The ball was exactly in my path. I took it well, the first touch, and that's why I could get away from the defenders. My first choice was actually to go past him (Weidenfeller) on the left side, but then he made a move, and I could put it on the other side, and he was on the wrong leg."

Robben said he did go out specifically to make amends for his miss last season, and praised the entire team for their efforts in sealing the continental crown.

"I always feel responsibility when I'm playing football," he said.

"But it's a team sport and a team performance, which is why we reached the final. The biggest reason is that we are a team. We fight for each other, we run for each other.

"Defensively, we've been unbelievably strong this season. And then you have players who can make a difference. Tonight, in the last minute, I scored a goal, and I think it's only credit to the whole team. I'm really proud to be part of this team."
