Vieira excited by MLS franchise

23 May 2013 13:08

Patrick Vieira has hailed Manchester City's involvement in setting up an MLS franchise in New York.

The Premier League outfit have joined forces with baseball's New York Yankees to establish New York City FC, who will begin competing in 2015.

Former City midfielder Claudio Reyna was unveiled as the franchise's director of football on Wednesday and Vieira, who is head of elite development at the Etihad Stadium, is excited as to what the future holds.

"I think it is a fantastic project," he said. "We are very proud to create this football club.

"I think you know the love and passion for the game in this country and the number of children who play in football and want to develop as a player.

"It is a fantastic opportunity for them because it is Manchester City, who have a fantastic experience of developing young players and a fantastic experience in the game.

"We bring our knowledge. That will help the young children to develop, but it will also help the MLS to develop.

"Working with them and exchanging knowledge is something that we are really proud of doing."
