Sigurdsson targets improvement at Tottenham

21 May 2013 12:12

Gylfi Sigurdsson has admitted he has struggled to adapt to life at Tottenham but is ready to push forward at the club next season.

The Iceland international has frequently been left on the bench by manager Andre Villas-Boas since his move from Hoffenheim last July.

He made 48

appearances for the club in all competitions this season but less than half of those were starts, and although he scored

seven goals he wants to have more of an impact at the club next season.

"There were two halves to my season," he said. "I

didn't really enjoy the first half (of the season) but in the second half I settled in a

lot more.

"It could have been a great season if we'd have qualified for the Champions League but that's the way it is.

"I didn't score many goals before Christmas but then things changed a little bit. Hopefully, I can continue that going into next season."

And the 23-year-old is hoping to be playing alongside Gareth Bale in the 2013-14 campaign. The Wales international is in high demand after a stunning season in which he has scored 26 goals to take Tottenham to within whisker of securing UEFA Champions League football.

Sigurdsson knows that keeping Bale will give the club a better chance of competing with the European elite in the future.

"For us to push forward it would be fantastic if he (Bale) stays," he continued. "I don't think there will be one player that can replace him.

"That's how good he was this season. He was very important for us.

"He's been here for a long time. He's very happy and obviously enjoying his football so, hopefully, he will stay."
