Di Canio criticised by PFA chief

21 May 2013 11:17

Paolo Di Canio has been warned over his hard-line approach at Sunderland by the chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).

The Italian has handed out fines of two weeks' wages to seven players recently and that, combined with vehement criticism of his charges in post-match press conferences, has caused unrest within the club.

Di Canio took over as Sunderland boss in March and has gained eight points from his seven games charge, leaving the Stadium of Light outfit 17th in the Premier League, three points clear of the relegation zone.

The 44-year-old questioned his players' commitment, attitude and professionalism in the wake of Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham, when two players, Phil Bardsley and Matthew Kilgallon, were left out of the squad after being pictured in a casino.

However, Taylor has come to the defence of the players and sounded a warning to Di Canio after the PFA were contacted by them about his conduct.

"He cannot be a law unto himself," Taylor said. "We're aware of player unrest at some comments made publicly, and other situations. A number of players are involved.

"We're aware of Paolo Di Canio's comments - it's something we had to deal with (when he was) at Swindon as well.

"I don't want to be confrontational but we expect him, and Sunderland as members of the Premier League, to abide by the rules agreed along with the PFA, and FA.

"Our rules for discipline are agreed with the Premier League and Football Association.”
