Schwarzer unaware of new contract offer from Fulham

20 May 2013 18:30

Mark Schwarzer has denied receiving a new contract from Fulham but would like to stay at the club next season if he will be number one.

The Australian has been at Fulham since 2008 and made 36 appearances for the club this season, keeping eight clean sheets including one in the final game of the season away at Swansea.

However, his contract is set to expire in June and, despite club reports that he had been offered a new deal, the goalkeeper has insisted he never received that offer.

"I can say that I haven't had the offer of a new contract," he told Sky Sports.

"(We) have until the end of June and will see what happens from there."

The 40-year-old arrived in England in 1996 and is keen to extend his stay, but he is unsure where that will be.

"I would love to stay in England," he said. "I have been here for a long time.

"At the moment I am still at Fulham until the end of June, and I will see what happens from there. To stay in the Premier League would be great."

The return of David Stockdale after a loan spell at Hull City will see him challenge Schwarzer to be first choice in goal for the next season.

And Schwarzer stated that all he wants is to be number one wherever he is playing, admitting that if

Fulham cannot offer him that, he will be forced to look elsewhere.

"It's a matter of opinion (on who should be number one)," he added. "There comes a time when people take decisions - whether they are easy or not, you have to respect them.

"If that was one of the decisions made (that he was not number one) then you try and look elsewhere.

"No-one can be guaranteed a starting position but I am not ready to sit on the bench and watch games. I want to play.

"I think I have done everything I possibly can to show I am more than capable of playing at this level.

"If the worst-case scenario happens I think I can walk away with my head held high.”
