O´Brien proud of West Ham finish

20 May 2013 18:19

Joey O'Brien was delighted that West Ham's victory over Reading enabled them to meet their pre-season target of a top-10 finish.

The defender has been a first-team regular this season and revealed that finishing 10th in the Premier League allowed them to achieve the goal set for them by manager Sam Allardyce before the campaign began.

That victory on the final day of the season over Reading lifted them into the top half of the table, and the Ireland international was glad to end on a high.

"During pre-season in Portugal the manager said we wanted a top-10 finish and we've achieved that," he told the club's official website. "There's

no better feeling than when you achieve your objectives in football and

it was good to end with a win. That was the main thing for the

fans."

West Ham have struggled against Reading in recent times, with their 4-2 victory being only the third time they have beaten them in the last 10 meetings, and it was a relief for O'Brien to get the three points.

"They've given us a hiding the last few times they've played us, so we're pleased to get one back there today," he continued.

"It's nice to end on a win from the last game of the season too. We wanted to end a good season on a high and we managed to do that."

After their promotion from the Championship, O'Brien was proud of West Ham's performance back in the top flight this season. He made 33 appearances for Allardyce's side this year and he revealed that the players intend to celebrate a successful season.

"Last year was a relief, but this year the lads are able to celebrate," he added. "We couldn't really celebrate last year - it was just utter relief that we were back in the Premier League.

"It's a different feeling for us now."
