Milan players targeted in Florence

20 May 2013 11:53

Milan players were subject to abuse at Campo di Marte station in Florence on Sunday after beating Fiorentina to third place in Serie A.

The Milan team bus travelled to Florence to catch a return train home after the side had secured UEFA Champions League football when two late goals, one a controversially awarded penalty, earned a 2-1 success over Siena.

However, a group were awaiting the Milan players at the station, and reportedly chanted about Milan 'stealing' their UEFA Champions League place.

The Florence outfit looked to have secured third place with a 5-1 victory away to Pescara, with Milan trailing Siena until late goals from Mario Balotelli and Philippe Mexes dashed their hopes.

Balotelli and Robinho were allegedly the subject of racist abuse, with Balotelli in particular furious at the incident.

He went to confront the group, and had to be dragged away from the scene by club officials.

Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo said: "I don't know what happened because I didn't see anything, being a way up front.

"I heard some noises, some verbal abuse, but unfortunately these things always happen. Luckily nothing very serious took place. Therefore let's turn the page and go on."

Meanwhile, midfielder Mathieu Flamini believes Milan deserved to claim third place in Serie A, but admitted the side were nervous in their narrow victory against Siena.

"(There was) much fear tonight, but it was important to secure qualification," Flamini said.

"I tried to do my best when I played this season. We started badly but we have gained qualification.

"It was an important goal from Mexes, we deserved to qualify. "

Match-winner Mexes echoed those sentiments, and expressed his desire to see Massimiliano Allegri remain in charge of the team.

"I think it was a complicated season for all of us here from the very start, but we had an incredible mental strength and I think Allegri should stay," Mexes commented.

"To finish third was something very satisfying for us. We proved that Milan deserved more than fourth place."
