English League One: Brentford 1 Yeovil 2

19 May 2013 16:30

Yeovil secured promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time with a 2-1 League One play-off final win over Brentford.

First-half goals from Paddy Madden and Dan Burn gave Gary Johnson's side a dream start to Sunday's game at Wembley Stadium. And, though Brentford hit back in the second period through Harlee Dean's header, their hopes of reaching the Championship were dashed by a resilient Yeovil back line.

Brentford famously missed the opportunity to seal automatic promotion on the final day of the season at the expense of Doncaster, and now face a further campaign in League One after losing out to the team who finished one place below them.

Both teams remained unchanged from their respective semi-final victories, with League One's top marksmen, Madden and Clayton Donaldson, the stand-out names on the teamsheet.

Madden had gone into the game with a three-goal lead over Donaldson in the race for the golden boot, and it did not take long for the Irishman to extend that advantage as he handed Yeovil a dream start. The striker pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the box and showed remarkable composure to direct his shot into the top corner with the outside of his boot.

The goal, Madden's 24th of an incredible campaign, came after just six minutes and noticeably calmed the nerves of Yeovil's players. It did not, however, prompt an end-to-end contest, with both sides struggling for rhythm on the vast Wembley pitch.

As a result, it was perhaps no surprise that the second goal came via a set-piece. Burn rose highest to meet a corner from the right-hand side and, though James Hayter did not succeed in his attempt to poke the ball home, his efforts distracted the goalkeeper sufficiently to see it squirm into the net.

Yeovil had not dominated proceedings at Wembley but were good value for their 2-0 lead, and they were rarely threatened as they took that advantage into half-time.

Uwe Rosler faced a tough task in rallying his troops at the break, but his words had a marked effect on Brentford's second-half performance. Dean went close with a headed effort from a corner not long after the restart, but Yeovil did not heed that warning at great cost.

The 21-year-old stooped to meet an Adam Forshaw with 51 minutes on the clock and did well to direct his header into the net. That goal lifted Rosler's men, and Tom Adeyemi's long-distance effort following a poor clearance from Yeovil goalkeeper Marek Stech was indicative of that new-found confidence.

However, close-range misses from Donaldson and Bradley Wright-Phillips were the closest Brentford came, as Yeovil held out to seal a historic win that consigned their opposition to a seventh consecutive unsuccessful play-off campaign.
