Benitez hails Torres return to form

19 May 2013 12:51

Interim Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez believes striker Fernando Torres can go from strength to strength.

The Spain international has returned to the type of form that made him so feared when playing under Benitez at Liverpool.

The 50 million pound transfer from Anfield to Stamford Bridge had been considered a big failure until he started to hit his stride during the second half of this season.

Torres fired the London club to UEFA Europa League success earlier in the week against Benfica after helping the club secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.

Benitez hailed the backroom team of Steve Holland, Boudewijn Zenden, Paco de Miguel and Chris Jones for helping to rejuvenate Torres.

He said: "It's more than just me. They have improved him. He has more pace, more confidence and he can score important goals for us.

"He has to keep working in the same way and I think that with a pre-season he will have plenty of time to improve himself physically.

"It's a question of keeping training the same way that he's training now and with confidence, he has the potential."

Torres has appeared a broken man at times on the pitch with his head bowed, however now he looks back to his old self.

Benitez added: "When you see a striker that is not scoring as many goals as he wants to score, this can happen. Now he's enjoying himself."
