Benitez coy on lap of honour

18 May 2013 11:31

Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez has refused to be drawn on whether he will take part in Sunday's lap of honour at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard, who has retained a frosty relationship with large sections of the club's support since his appointment in November, led his side to victory over Benfica in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday.

And, while he insisted he had received kind messages since the win at the Amsterdam Arena, the 53-year-old would not commit to joining in with the end-of-season celebrations after the upcoming clash with Everton.

"I will concentrate on the game and I will take part in the 90 minutes, for sure," he said.

"But since Wednesday I have been thanking the fans who sent messages and supported me, on my own website.

"I had this before from a lot of fans, messages on the website and emails and since winning the trophy there have been even more. A lot of them have contacted me."

A play-off between Arsenal and Chelsea for third place in the Premier League and the final automatic UEFA Champions League qualification place could be required should the right combination of results transpire on the final day.

But the former Liverpool manager is keen to get one over on his one-time Merseyside adversary David Moyes to ensure that does not happen.

"I think we have to consider all the scenarios. First we want to win and we expect we can win," he continued. "We have to approach the day thinking about winning and see what will happen.

"It is always important to finish well. Having been working so hard it will be a pity if we can't guarantee the top three and the players know how important it is. We will be fine.

"If we win, there won't be a play-off. If we have to do it, those are the rules. It would not be ideal but we can win and avoid the situation. We can do our job and I am confident we will do that."
