Walters aiming to end season on a goalscoring high

17 May 2013 14:48

Stoke's top goalscorer Jonathan Walters wants to finish 2012-13 on a high by taking his season's tally into double figures for the first time.

Only two Stoke players have previously scored 10 or more goals in the Premier League - Ricardo Fuller and Peter Crouch - and Walters needs two more in their final game against Southampton to achieve the figure himself.

Tony Pulis' side have struggled to score goals this season and have managed just 33 in their 37 matches, with only QPR scoring fewer goals.

Despite their poor performances in front of goal, Walters insists that he and his fellow strikers have been doing everything they can to get their names on the scoresheet.

"I'm always trying to get into the box to get on the end of things," he told The Sentinel. "But that's not always easy when you're playing on the right or the left.

"I think that most of the time I've been here we have tended to play with only one up front.

"But yes, I would like to score more because we defend as a team and move forward as a team."

Stoke battled at the bottom of the table for large parts of the season, but had an upturn in form to move away from the relegation zone and edge into the safety of mid-table.

Walters is pleased that they got some reward for their hard work and believes that they deserve some luck on the last day to end the season on a high.

They have not won on the last day since 2006 when they beat Brighton 5-1 in the Championship and in the Premier League, they have lost three of the four final-day matches they have played and picked up their only point last season in a draw with Bolton.

"We are due something on the last day of the season when you look at results from past seasons," he added. "It would be nice to finish on a high after that bad run we had.

"We ended 2012 on a high, then went on such a bad run after that. We needed to get ourselves out of that slump and not leave it so late, but it shows that anyone from the bottom half of the table could have gone down.

"Now we have come through that and we want to finish on a high.

"If we finish in 10th for the first time that would be excellent, but we know that a win guarantees 11th."
