Coloccini: French recruits will blossom with time

17 May 2013 16:15

Fabricio Coloccini has backed Newcastle United's most recent French signings to improve once they have more time in the Premier League.

The likes of Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran and Massadio Haidara have enjoyed mixed fortunes since arriving at St James' Park in January, with United only securing their Premier League safety on Sunday against QPR.

However, captain Coloccini, who has been linked with a departure from the club at the end of the season, believes the French contingent will only get better with more time in the English top flight.

Speaking ahead of his side's final league game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday, the Argentine told the Chronicle: "It's normal – the same happened with me in the first year.

"It was pretty difficult but I think the players that came are doing very well.

"The game here is quicker but next year will be better for them."

With Coloccini looking likely to leave the club due to a desire to return to his homeland, Sunday's fixture could be the last of his Newcastle career.

It has been a roller coaster for the defender, who joined from Deportivo in 2008, involving relegation to the Championship, promotion back to the Premier League and a UEFA Europa League run to the quarter-final this season.

Speaking about captaining the side, he said: "It means a lot to me.

"I don't count how many cups I have won.

"I just try to watch and play in the next game."
