Clarke aiming to spoil party

16 May 2013 18:22

West Brom manager Steve Clarke insisted his team are out to do more than make up the numbers when they face Manchester United on Sunday.

Alex Ferguson's side travel to the Hawthorns for the United manager's final game in charge following a 26-year spell with the Old Trafford outfit after clinching their 20th Premier League title last month.

There were celebrations last weekend as United collected the Premier League trophy in Ferguson's final home game against Swansea City and, although the travelling fans are likely to be eager to honour the Scot's time at the club again on Sunday, compatriot Clarke was keen to stress that his charges will be aiming to take all three points and dampen the 71-year-old's afternoon.

"We're not there for a party on Sunday," Clarke said. "Our party will be with our supporters at the end of the game when the players get the chance to thank the fans and the fans get the chance to thank the players for the season.

"That's the only party we're interested in and we'll do what we can to finish on a high.

"We started the season on a high by beating Liverpool and we want to finish on a high against the champions.

"I'd be surprised if Sir Alex was just there to celebrate his last match as a manager. It's about competition and that's what he'll be there for."

Clarke's side were hammered 4-0 by Norwich City last weekend and the former Chelsea and Liverpool assistant expects his players to bounce back.

"I'm not hoping for a response, I know I will get one," he said.

"This is a group of players who know how to respond to adversity and know how to get results in the Premier League. That's why they are where they are in the table."
