Werner pays homage to ´extraordinary´ Carragher

15 May 2013 15:51

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has praised retiring defender Jamie Carragher ahead of his final game for the club against QPR on Sunday.

Carragher has spent his entire 17-year senior career at Anfield, making over 700 appearances and helping the club to a clutch of honours including their remarkable UEFA Champions League triumph over Milan in 2005.

However, the 35-year-old, who won 38 international caps for England, is set to round off an illustrious spell in professional football, but Werner stressed that there will always be opportunities for him to be involved in the set-up at Liverpool.

He told The Liverpool Echo: "The door will always be open for him here, to spend 16 years in the first team at Liverpool is testament to Jamie's professionalism. He really is an extraordinary person and a man of remarkable integrity.

"His love for the club is such that he has always put Liverpool first. In moments of adversity he's been there, lifting players around him. He gives everything and suffers for the team."

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry also expressed his admiration for the veteran centre-back, naming him among the top five defenders to have ever graced the Premier League.

Henry told Liverpool's official website: "When Carragher retires, it will be a sad day for any Liverpool fan and for anyone who likes the game.

"I have had incredible battles against him. I lost some and I won some but they were always fair and always hard. He's a competitor.

"For me, he will go down as one of the top five. If you talk about how long he has played for Liverpool and what he won there and what type of player he was, he will go down as one of the greatest in the history of the league."
