Vertonghen: All we can do is win

15 May 2013 16:04

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is demanding a win ahead of Sunday's season-ending fixtures, after Arsenal's win on Tuesday.

Arsenal moved one point clear of Spurs in fourth spot in the Premier League table on the back of a 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic at the Emirates Stadium.

With the match evenly poised at 1-1 after 60 minutes, goals from Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski and Aaron Ramsey put Arsenal in the box seat to claim a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifying stages.

Tottenham now know that even if they beat Sunderland on Sunday, they will still finish fifth – a result that would see them competing in the UEFA Europa League next season – if Arsenal win at Newcastle United.

Vertonghen says his team-mates have maintained their focus on what they can control though, and that is defeating Paolo Di Canio's side at White Hart Lane.

"All we can do is win our games and it's important for us to keep believing," Vertonghen told the club's official website.

"We would have to do that anyway on Sunday, so let's hope we can."

Vertonghen has made 33 Premier League appearances for Tottenham this season, scoring four goals.
