Guthrie hails Adkins effect

15 May 2013 17:55

Reading midfielder Danny Guthrie believes the relegated Premier League club have made progress under Nigel Adkins.

Adkins' side fell to a 2-0 defeat against deposed Premier League champions Manchester City on Tuesday, but produced a spirited display in a highly competitive game between two sides with little to play for.

Former Newcastle man Guthrie was disappointed that the Madejski Stadium outfit did not take anything from the game, but feels they have improved as a team since Adkins' appointment in March.

"It was difficult at times," he told the club's official website. "We shot ourselves in the foot with the two goals, they were poor from our point of view. At 1-0 we had some chances but the second goal killed the game off.

"But it's been a change for me and I'm really enjoy playing. The style of football suits me, and I think the boys are progressing well with it. We've come a long way from the first game under the new gaffer at Arsenal.

"Everyone is getting to know their new role and the style of play. You can see we've had glimpses of it coming off each week. Even against City at 1-0 we kept the ball and created some chances."

Reading will play their final game in the top flight for at least a year when they take on West Ham at Upton Park, but Guthrie insists he will be at the club next term and is looking forward to competing for promotion in the Championship.

"It's disappointing (relegation) but we've come to terms with it and everyone's looking forward to next season. Everyone's in the same boat. We've been aware for a couple of weeks now what the reality is and we've all got our heads round it.

"I've got two years left on my contract, we've got a great squad here and I'm really looking forward to next season."
