Cabaye positive of Newcastle improvement

15 May 2013 14:01

Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has backed his side to surge up the Premier League table next season.

After finishing fifth last term, Alan Pardew's men have battled in the current campaign and only secured their survival on the penultimate weekend of the season with a 2-1 win at already-relegated QPR on Sunday.

It has been a tough season for Newcastle, but they can still finish in the top-half of the Premier League table if results go their way this weekend.

Cabaye said his team have not celebrated survival though and they are determined to improve when given the chance next campaign.

"We are satisfied we are safe, but we are not proud of what has happened (this season)," Cabaye told The Journal.

"We didn't want to have everything hanging on the last game. If that had happened, it would have been very nervous for everybody. Now the job is done, although there is not really any celebrations going on."

"We have to prepare well for next season because we cannot have another season like this one.

"We know we are capable of much better. We have a good team. I am sure everyone feels the same, but we have to learn from this season to make sure next season is better."

Newcastle splashed the cash in January in a bid to reverse their flagging fortunes, signing five French players.

None of the signings have consistently impressed, but Cabaye believes the club's French Legion will get better next season, as will the rest of the team.

"The new French players will have more time to prepare in the pre-season and that is important," he said.

"That will help all of us because next season, they will have had more experience in the Premier League. It's very difficult to adapt quickly, especially if you're moving in January.

"It was a new league for those players, and a new type of football. We will have more time to prepare now.

"Hopefully, we will have a good pre-season, a tough pre-season that will make sure we are fit for next year. I think we have good quality in the team, and we can certainly be much higher in the league table."

Also at Newcastle, utility man Ryan Taylor will leave for the United States on Wednesday as he undergoes a serious operation with a renowned knee specialist.
