Vlaar calls for strong finish

14 May 2013 16:43

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar wants to finish the season on a high no matter the result of Wigan's fixture with Arsenal.

If Roberto Martinez's men fail to win at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, Villa's Premier League safety will be secure, but three points for the FA Cup winners would mean a nervy final-day encounter between the two sides at the DW Stadium.

However, Vlaar is determined to end the season with a win regardless of Wigan's result against Arsenal.

"It's Wigan's last chance on Tuesday, so they have to win," the Dutchman told Villa's official website.

"Of course it's an important game for us. Of course it would be nice if Arsenal win. Maybe they will help, but we will see. It's important for us.

"I think I'm going to be watching the game. I don't know if we'll see it together. We haven't spoken about it.

"But I've said it before we have it in our own hands and if we have to do it ourselves, we're capable of doing that.

"All of the teams have to try to get good results so we will see what happens on Tuesday and Sunday.

"The most important thing is we'll still have it in our own hands with the last game. If we have to do it ourselves then we will.

"I look forward to giving the fans a good result, whatever happens at Arsenal."

Vlaar, who signed from Feyenoord in pre-season, has made 26 appearances for the club this season, scoring one goal.
