Mills slams Mancini´s people skills

14 May 2013 03:37

Former Manchester City defender Danny Mills has claimed Roberto Mancini was sacked because 'he just ignored players from day one'.

Manchester City confirmed they had sacked Mancini on Monday after the Italian manager 'failed to achieve any of (the club's) stated targets' in the 2012/13 season.

While Mills never played under Mancini, retiring five months before the 48-year-old former Inter Milan manager replaced Mark Hughes, the former right-back was scathing in his review of the Italian's man-management skills.

"There wasn't the togetherness between player and manager," Mills told the BBC.

"Basically, he just ignored players from day one.

"He was the manager, he made decisions, he made no attempt to have any sort of relationship with the players, didn't take them under his wing.

"It was very much, 'I'm the manager, I'll do my thing, I'll pick the team and then I'll disappear'.

"You speak to the players and you know there's a lot of discontent in that dressing room.

"They'll say it wasn't a particularly happy camp at times, there were a lot of different factions in that dressing room."

Mills' comments are seemingly backed by Mancini's series of quarrels with players including the infamous row with Carlos Tevez last season, following the Argentine striker's refusal to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Mancini also singled out captain Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart and Samir Nasri for criticism this season and Mills believes that is a huge mistake.

"You cannot come out and criticise your players publicly," Mills said.

"Arsene Wenger doesn't do it at Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't do it at Manchester United.

"We know he kicks boots, or give them the hairdryer, he might even have had the odd punch-up, but in public he protects his players.

"You have to ask why didn't those top players who they (Manchester City) were linked with go there in the summer?

"They were in the Champions League, they were the champions of England, they pay more money than anybody else, why would you not go there unless it wasn't a happy place to be?"
