Pardew moves to clarify Arsenal ´joke´

13 May 2013 16:39

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew insists claims he did not care of his side lost 4-0 to Arsenal on the last day of the season were a joke.

Pardew's side secured their top-flight safety at the weekend with a 2-1 win over QPR and the 51-year-old said afterwards: "We can look forward to our last game of the season now and I hope the supporters enjoy it. I don't really care if Arsenal win 4-0, although I'm sure Spurs will."

After receiving criticism from supporters and observers alike, however, Pardew has backtracked on his words and is confident his side will perform to their best at St James' Park on Sunday.

"I know people will have picked up on my comments about not caring about the result against Arsenal, which were, of course, a joke," he told the club's official website.

"It is definitely not the case that I would be happy for us to lose 4-0 against Arsenal on Sunday. I simply want our players and fans to be able to enjoy the game without looking over their shoulders.

"Even though we are now safe, we will be putting in the same effort that we would for any other Premier League game."

Newcastle have lost their last two home matches in the Premier League, conceding nine goals in the process and scoring none.

The first of those defeats was an embarrassing 3-0 derby capitulation to Sunderland, before Liverpool made a mockery of their defence in an easy 6-0 win.

"Our last two results at St. James' Park - against Sunderland and Liverpool - have been nowhere near good enough, and Sunday gives us the chance to put that right," he said.

"We want to end the season on a positive, to finish in as high a position as possible and to give the fans something to cheer about on the final day of what has been a frustrating season.

"Arsenal will be doing everything they can to try to achieve a Champions League spot and we won't make it easy for them, make no mistake about that.

"This is a game everyone at this football club wants to win."
