Mancini sacked by Manchester City

13 May 2013 23:44

Roberto Mancini has been sacked as manager of Manchester City, a year to the day after winning the Premier League.

The Italian's dismissal had been widely expected for a number of days but in a statement on City's website, the club explained that he had been "relieved of his duties" following an "end of season review process".

The club also explained that Mancini had failed to meet any of their expectations for the campaign except securing qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: "Roberto’s record speaks for itself and he has the respect and gratitude of Sheikh Mansour, myself and the board for all of his hard work and commitment over the last three and a half years.

"He has clearly also secured the love and respect of our fans. He has done as he promised and delivered silverware and success, breaking the club’s 35-year trophy drought and securing the title in 2012.

"I would like to personally and publicly thank him for his dedication to the progress that he has overseen and for his support and continued friendship."

Assistant manager Brian Kidd will take control of the club for their remaining Premier League fixtures against Reading and Norwich as well as their post-season tour of America.

City finished second in the Premier League this season, with the title heading back to rivals Manchester United, while they were also disappointing in the Champions League, failing to secure a win in the group stage.

Mancini's side drew three and lost three as they exited the competition while they were also knocked out of the League Cup in the third round by Aston Villa.

While they did make the final of the FA Cup, they were beaten 1-0 by Wigan Athletic on Saturday, amid rumours that Mancini was to be replaced by Manuel Pellegrini at the end of the season.
