Bardsley keen for season to end

13 May 2013 19:02

Phil Bardsley has admitted he is looking to next season after scoring in Sunderland's 1-1 draw with Southampton on Sunday.

The defender has suffered with injuries over the season, while also seeing his side flirt with relegation, and the former Manchester United defender believes scoring at the Stadium of Light can help to put to bed a disappointing season.

Despite having made just 11 starts in the Premier League this season, Bardsley may have scored what proves to be a crucial goal with Sunderland's draw potentially being enough to keep them in the Premier League this season as they currently sit four points above 18th-placed Wigan, who have a game in hand.

He told The Chronicle: "Hopefully that goal will keep us up. It was nice to get on the scoresheet after a disaster of a season for myself.

"I am delighted I have been able to put something towards this season and give something back. I cannot wait for the end of the campaign."

Bardsley admitted that this campaign, which has seen him battle an ongoing ankle problem, has been one of the most difficult he has had to face.

"I have enjoyed every minute of six years at Sunderland," he said, "however, this one has been the most difficult in terms of injuries."

The 27-year-old added that while his side look all but safe from relegation, there remains work to be done for the club to retain their Premier League status.

"It is tight at the bottom but we still have a game left," he said.

"Spurs are a great team but we can go there and try to get a result – though we will be looking for Arsenal to do us a favour."
