Ancelotti hails deserved title win

13 May 2013 02:10

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Carlo Ancelotti has claimed his team showed they 'deserve' to win Ligue 1 after clinching the title at Lyon.

Jeremy Menez's second-half strike wrapped up the three points for PSG at third-placed Lyon's Stade de Gerland, which secured the capital club's first Ligue 1 title since 1994.

Speaking after Sunday's match, Ancelotti praised his players for securing the championship away to one of the teams that have challenged them throughout the season.

"I'm very happy, above all because winning here in Lyon is never easy," Ancelotti said.

"We played a good match, a tough match.

"We showed that we deserve the title.

"It was a tough season but after December, when the side gelled into a solid, compact unit, things went well."

Ancelotti added that he has yet to speak to PSG about his future at the club as speculation continues that he will leave Paris, with Real Madrid considered a potential destination for the 53-year-old Italian coach.

"I haven't spoken with the club about my future yet but we have time," Ancelotti said.

"There are still two matches left and we will respect the league and the other teams but the players deserve to celebrate.

"We can't wait to get back to Paris to party with our fans."

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi claimed 2013 will be remembered as the start of a period of domestic domination for the Parisians, while adding he is 'happy' with Ancelotti.

"Tonight is just the beginning, hopefully of a glorious new chapter in the history of PSG," Al-Khelaifi said.

"I was very stressed by the challenges of Lyon and Marseille.

"Next season begins right now.

"We'll celebrate for a while with the players and the staff.

"My thanks to everyone for this first trophy.

"Concerning Ancelotti, we'll see at the end of the season.

"There is a season left on his contract, so in principle he should be staying.

"I'm very happy with him and we'll do all we can to keep him at the club."
