Zabaleta laments ´bad situation´

12 May 2013 04:10

Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta has hinted changes are needed at the club after they failed to win the FA Cup.

Zabaleta was sent off in Manchester City's 1-0 loss to Wigan in Saturday's FA Cup final with the 28-year-old Argentine copping a second yellow card in the 84th minute.

Ben Watson's header in second-half stoppage time clinched the FA Cup for Wigan - the first major trophy in the club's history - while it left Manchester City trophyless for the season and Zabaleta conceded that is not good enough.

"We're in a bad situation," Zabaleta said.

"When you look at the team, you expect City to win a trophy.

"It was the (last) opportunity for us to lift a trophy this season and now we'll have to see what happens in the future."

While speculation has been widespread for weeks that Manchester City would replace manager Roberto Mancini at the end of the season, Zabaleta's post-match comments simply added credibility to the rumours that the Italian will be sacked.

While Mancini praised Wigan for attacking Manchester City, the 48-year-old Italian blamed Zabaleta for the defeat.

"I said before the game it's difficult as Wigan play football," Mancini said.

"Every time we play them it is a problem.

"We had a problem in the middle as Yaya was so tired and I moved him in front with Jack Rodwell in the middle.

"But we didn't have any problems before (the red card).

"It was Zaba's sending off as we had the ball and lost it.

"If it wasn’t for this we didn't have any problems.

"We had chances, two or three, but in the end I don't think we played like we did usually. We didn't play our football."

Meanwhile, Mancini rubbished claims he will be replaced by Malaga head coach Manuel Pellegrini, slamming Manchester City for allowing speculation to contine.

"There has been too much talk about my future over the last six months and especially the last two weeks," Mancini said.

"I don't know why the club didn't stop this because I don't think it is correct. I don't think it is true. It's rubbish.

"I haven't asked the club about my future.

"There is no need for me to ask because I still have four years left on my contract."
