Whelan insists Martinez will stay

12 May 2013 14:31

Wigan chairman David Whelan feels manager Roberto Martinez will remain with the club after guiding them to the first major trophy.

Martinez's men sealed victory in the FA Cup final with a dramatic 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday, Ben Watson heading an injury-time winner for the relegation-threatened side.

The Spaniard has earned great plaudits for keeping Wigan in the Premier League since joining the club in 2009 and has been linked with a move away as a result of his achievements with the DW Stadium outfit.

However, the often outspoken Whelan has stressed his view that the former Swansea boss will continue his work with Wigan, but that survival remains the immediate priority with Martinez's side currently three points adrift of safety.

He told the BBC: "The big fight is to stay up, the second thing is Roberto will make his own mind up, I do not make anything for him.

"We have two massive games. Last night our boys went home, they knew they had to go to straight to bed, no messing about.

"Our boys, no celebration, no anything, just dedicated to the task of keeping Wigan in the Premier League."

Wigan's cup success was a poignant moment for Whelan, who took over the club in 1995 when they were in the fourth tier, and the 76-year-old could not hide his joy at the one of the club's greatest triumphs.

"It was unbelievable," Whelan added.

"I thought we played fantastically well. I did celebrate a bit last night . My wife and I went out with my daughter, my friends and directors of Wigan.

"It is a special day for Wigan. Your feelings can never be expressed. Our boys totally and utterly deserved it, I thought we outplayed Manchester City across the whole of the game."
