Redknapp: We have not got the quality

12 May 2013 20:10

After defeat to Newcastle on Sunday, Harry Redknapp admitted there is hard work to be done to improve the quality of the squad at QPR.

The already-relegated side began their final home game of the season well and took the lead in the 11th minute, but defensive errors cost them dearly as they gifted Newcastle a 2-1 win.

When Junior Hoilett was fouled by Mathieu Debuchy on the edge of the penalty area, Loic Remy stepped-up to put them ahead from the spot.

However, a penalty from Hatem Ben Arfa and a Yoan Gouffran strike sealed the three points for the visitors.

The QPR manager was unhappy with the way his team fell apart and acknowledged there is a lot of work to do if they are to compete at the top end of the Championship next season.

"We started well and looked bright," Redknapp said. "But once we gave it (the lead) away we seemed to lose everything.

“The team we had out there today would not finish in the top half of the Championship.

“Something

has got to be done. That’s a fact. We haven't got the quality. We’re

short of good players who can really play at the top level.

“You might say they have the quality as they’ve played at other clubs, but it doesn’t work that way.

“We’ll try to do something but it will be difficult to shift players. It will be very hard.”

Jose Bosingwa came in for abuse from the home crowd for his first-half performance as he gave the penalty away and then under-hit a back pass to Rob Green that caused the goalkeeper's clearance to go straight at Gouffran, who volleyed the ball into an empty net.

Bosingwa was substituted at half-time and Redknapp admitted the change was to protect the player and lift spirits around the ground.

“We needed a lift at half-time so I decided to make the changes,” he added.

"You can’t play when there’s that sort of negativity around the place, it wasn’t going to help, so I decided to change it."

“He (Bosingwa) cost us a couple of goals and I decided to bring on Shaun Derry, who’ll always give you an honest performance, and Fabio (Da Silva).

“I’m not blaming him entirely. I just felt there was not a good feeling and, trying to get back into the game, we needed the crowd behind us and they were obviously unhappy with him."
