Benitez lauds record-breaking Lampard

12 May 2013 05:47

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has hailed Frank Lampard after the midfielder broke the club's all-time goal-scoring record.

Lampard scored a second-half double in Chelsea's 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday to record his 202nd and 203rd goals for the club, surpassing Bobby Tambling's record set in 1970.

While Benitez was left with a headache ahead of Wednesday's Europa League final after Eden Hazard and John Terry both suffered injuries against Aston Villa, the Spanish manager praised Lampard's 'fantastic achievement'.

"I said before that hopefully (Lampard) can score two goals and then we don't need to talk about the record so fantastic achievement, really pleased for him and for everyone especially because we won," Benitez said after the victory.

"But to score the number of goals that he has is amazing so hopefully he can score more in the next two games."

The win at Villa Park ensured Chelsea will finish in the top-four of the English Premier League this season, which means they will at least qualify for the preliminary stages of next season's Champions League.

A win against Everton next week would wrap up third spot for Chelsea and an automatic berth in the group stages of the 2013/14 Champions League.

But first Chelsea must travel to Amsterdam to take on Benfica in this season's Europa League final and Benitez remains hopeful both Terry and Hazard will play.

Terry was stretchered off in the 77th minute with an ankle injury, while Hazard left the pitch late in the match holding his hamstring.

"John Terry twisted his ankle, we're waiting for the scan to see how serious it is," Benitez told Sky Sports.

"Hazard also felt something in his hamstring so again we're waiting for the scan.

"A pity for the final but at least we won (today) and it was a good game."
