Lampard hails team-mates after breaking record

11 May 2013 17:55

Chelsea's Frank Lampard has praised his team-mates after he netted a double against Aston Villa to become the club's record goalscorer.

The midfielder scored two second-half goals, including a late winner, to beat the mark of 202 set by Bobby Tambling as Rafael Benitez's side came from a goal down to seal a 2-1 victory in a game which saw Ramires and Villa goalscorer Christian Benteke dismissed.

Victory all but ensures Chelsea's place in next season's UEFA Champions League and Lampard was pleased to have broken the record in such an important encounter.

"It's a huge win for the team. After the long season we wanted to put it to bed today. We showed character to keep going and get out result," he told Sky Sports.

"People have been talking about the record a lot and it's great to get it finally, especially in an important game. It means everything, the support I've had from my team-mates and fans has been incredible, they put it on a plate for it sometimes."

Benitez did not hesitate in stressing the magnitude of Lampard's achievement, but, although the Spaniard was pleased to see his side practically secure a place in top four courtesy of their impressive goal difference, he revealed they are sweating over the fitness of John Terry and Eden Hazard for the UEFA Europa League final after the pair both sustained injuries.

Speaking about Lampard he said: "I'm really pleased for him and the team. He's a real professional. He trains well and is always pushing and ready to play."

He added: "It (qualifying for the UEFA Champions League) was a great achievement. With a lot of games we have played, it was difficult but we did well.

"John Terry has twisted his ankle and we have to wait for scan. Hazard hurt his ankle and we will have to wait and see."
