Martinez focused on Wigan job

10 May 2013 17:14

Roberto Martinez insists his main priority is Wigan Athletic after emerging as a contender for the managerial post at Everton.

The Merseyside club are searching for a new boss, with David Moyes set to join Manchester United in July to replace the retiring Alex Ferguson.

But Martinez, whose Wigan side are embroiled in a relegation battle and will contest the FA Cup final with Manchester City on Saturday, is fully focused on affairs at the DW Stadium.

"In our position, you can imagine, this is the peak of our season," Martinez said.

"You don't get Wigan Athletic in two major competitions in May, so we're not going to lose any focus or any concentration. Any individuals now - they are not important.

"All that matters is Wigan Athletic. All that matters to us is to be at our best to compete in three major games that are vitally important for the future of our football club.

"Whatever goes around on the outside or inside the media, it doesn't matter for the team and the football club internally."

The Spaniard is relishing the prospect of managing his side at Wembley and is well aware of the size of the game.

"You have to dream and the bigger the dream the bigger the achievement," he added.

"Winning the FA Cup would be there forever. Just arriving in the final is a photographic moment in the history of our football club. Winning a major trophy would take it to a different level.

"We are all aware what this could mean. There are a billion people watching this game. Tomorrow is as good as it gets and we need to take advantage."

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has also been mentioned as a potential successor to Moyes and, while he admits it's nice to be mentioned, insisted his link to the job is merely a rumour.

"That's all it is, speculation," Lennon said.

"I've got a great support, group of players and I'm happy here. We're already looking at Champions League preparation and bringing in new players.

"Of course, it is nice to get recognition. Roberto Martinez was favourite yesterday and I'm favourite today. It could be someone else tomorrow."
