Garde looking to sustain top-three push

10 May 2013 17:10

Lyon manager Remi Garde is hoping his side can maintain their charge for a UEFA Champions League place with a win over Paris Saint-Germain.

Garde's side head into the crucial clash on the back of a 3-0 win at Nancy last weekend, but know the focus will be on PSG, who can secure the Ligue 1 title with a win.

Lyon had been in the title picture for much of the season, but have since fallen away after failing to a win a single game in March. However in spite of that disappointment, Garde insists that Sunday's clash is still a very important game for his charges.

He said: "We would have loved if Lyon-PSG was a true final for the Ligue 1 but it's not. It's a very important game for us, to keep the control of our destiny, we need to get points, we need to win that game. Obviously it will be very important, for Paris as well, I’m sure they want to be champions as soon as possible.

PSG were held to a nervy 1-1 draw with Valenciennes in their last encounter, which has led to many to suggest that Carlo Ancelotti's men may be feeling the pressure as they close in on their first league crown since 1994. Garde, though, feels it is natural for a side to be anxious when on the verge of success.

"You know, the path of a future champion, who also made it quite far in the Champions League, it's a path (that is) sometimes hard. We're focusing on Paris because they're first, but what happened in Paris the last weeks surely happened in every other team. When you are number one, you get more chances to be nervous," Garde added.

Ancelotti's men are set to be without Thiago Silva; Marco Verratti; David Beckham and Salvatore Sirigu through suspension, but Garde does not think their absences will have too much of an impact on Sunday's game.

He explained: "If Paris missed 20 players, it could make a difference. But in that situation I think they have a group of players that allow them to replace an international player with another one, or with a future one."
