Poyet calls for consistency at Brighton ahead of the play-offs

9 May 2013 19:19

Brighton manager Gustavo Poyet wants his players to behave as normal in the build-up to their Championship play-off semi-final.

The Uruguayan led his side to a fourth-placed finish this season - they were in and around the top six for the majority of the campaign and were guaranteed a place in in the the play-offs with games to spare.

That has given everyone involved with the club the chance to prepare for the two-legged tie with Crystal Palace, and dream of promotion to the Premier League, but despite the significance of the games Poyet insists he is not treating them any differently to a normal league match.

"We want to do the same as we do for every other

game," he told the club's official website. "We don’t want the players to change anything in their life and we

don’t want them to do anything differently.

"I’ve

said to a few players with little kids that if their child is normally

awake at two in the morning and they normally get up, get up again at

the same time. Nothing should change because of this game."

"Of course, there are a few more consequences but we must try and

do exactly the same. We will not change at all.

"We will approach it like we did at Leeds United two weeks ago and

every other away game this season."

Brighton have not played in English football's top flight for 30 years and Poyet knows what it would mean to the fans if they were to get past Crystal Palace and then win the final at Wembley.

He was quick to praise the performances of his players who have inspired their supporters by raising their game significantly this season having finished mid-table at the end of last season.

"This

team can make so many people happy from a football game, which is great," he continued.

"It’s hard work as you have to run and suffer a bit but it’s a very nice

kind of hard work, especially when you are making so many people happy.

"We need to do what we can to make a lot of people proud of the players we have at this club."

The fierce rivalry between Brighton and Palace will create an intense atmosphere for both legs of the semi-final, but Poyet has urged the fans not to let emotions get the better of them over the two matches.

"It’s a football game," he added. "We don’t have to go over the top on anything else.

"A

few people will be singing at each other with nice banter but that’s

it. Nothing more because it’s a football game and there are not lives at

stake. Families and health are more important than a football game."
