Pearson delighted at Nugent´s impact

Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson hailed David Nugent as he gave his side a Championship play-off semi-final first leg victory over Watford.

The striker had not scored for Leicester since January but timed his run perfectly in the 83rd minute to meet Anthony Knockaert's free-kick and head past Manuel Almunia.

Pearson was delighted with the effort he showed throughout the game as he dragged the Watford defence around the pitch, and felt that his late goal was just rewards for a strong all-round performance.

"We were able to take a chance towards the end when it looked like it was going to end 0-0," he told Sky Sports.

"For any striker to go any length of time without scoring it effects them to a certain extent, it was just a matter of time before he (Nugent) scored again, it was an important goal for us."

Having survived a second-half bombardment from Watford Leicester managed to rally late on and threaten the visitors goal on numerous occasions, but despite taking a slender lead into the second-leg Pearson refused to get carried away.

"It's half-time, (it was a) tight game (between) two good sides.

"(It is) all to play for for both sides still, we have got to be positive we will try and win the next game as well.

"The play-offs are always a bit difficult difficult to negotiate, there is a lot to play

for, both sides will still feel they've got a really good chance."

For Zola it was a disappointing evening as his men dominated large parts of the game but were guilty of wasting some good chances from promising positions.

And the Italian admitted that the late winner had come as a surprise to him as he never thought his side would lose the game having been in control for so long.

"I didn't expect them to score, I didn't see that coming," he told Sky Sports.

"I thought we looked like we were in control, we had a few chances we should have scored but that's the Championship. (We will) take the positives from the game and look forward to Sunday.

"We have to win the game, we're going to be exactly what we've done many times, play our game, it's going to be tough because this game will give them a lot of confidence but we have a lot of confidence too."
