Monk: Swansea motivated by Cardiff taunts

9 May 2013 13:32

Swansea captain Garry Monk claims his side will use derogatory chants from Cardiff City players as motivation when they meet next season.

Malky Mackay's players were seen taunting their local rivals through song during the victory parade to celebrate their promotion to the Premier League as Championship winners.

But Monk is intent on making those involved regret their actions next season, when the first south Wales derby since February 2011 will be played.

"We all know about the history between the clubs and I saw a little bit on YouTube this week that made me laugh a little bit," he told The South Wales Evening Post.

"Fair play to them they're celebrating, they've obviously had a few beers and got above themselves, but that's the way it goes.

"At the end of the day, let them do what they've got to do and we'll concentrate on us. Come game-time we'll see what happens. As club captain, I'd never have done that. I might have thought it, but not said it.

"If anything we'll try to use it as motivation."

The 34-year-old went on to explain that his team-mates will not be making any bold predictions ahead of the rivalry resuming.

"I remember when we played them for the first time in a long time, when we beat them 1-0 in the cup, and they were predicting scores and stuff in the papers," he added.

"Roger Johnson at the time and (Jay) Bothroyd, they were all predicting scores. You just set yourself up when you do that.

"All credit to Cardiff, they deserve to come up and anyone that wins the Championship - fair-dos to them.

"I'm looking forward to it next season. I'm a Swansea fan now as well, I've been here nine or ten years and I guess there'll always be that rivalry with Cardiff. It's with the boys that have been there a while and spreads to the boys that are new to the club.

"Nearer the time they'll sense the build-up to those games. It's like a cup final when we play them and what a great occasion it will be when it happens in the Premier League."
