Knox, McGarvey sing Ferguson´s praises

9 May 2013 03:08

Former Scottish colleagues of Alex Ferguson have praised the retiring Manchester United manager for his professionalism.

Ferguson announced his retirement on Wednesday after an enormously successful 27 years at Old Trafford.

He had already carved out a significant reputation for himself north of the border in his native Scotland before taking up the United job, winning the top flight title three times with Aberdeen and also collecting the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

His former assistant Archie Knox, who journeyed south to team up with Ferguson at United, paid tribute to his old boss.

"Alex was set and wanted to continue at Aberdeen. He had a lot of success at Aberdeen, and he could have carried on but the Manchester United thing came along and everybody knows the story now, he's had a phenomenal career," Knox said.

"Never to be repeated, I would have thought. It's proven that he's one of the greatest managers ever."

Former Scotland international Frank McGarvey, who played under Ferguson at St Mirren, said his old manager's philosophy of developing young talent was present from early in his career.

"The way he ran St Mirren was exactly the same way as he ran Manchester United last season," McGarvey said.

"He'd make good buys, bring in younger players, which is always a good thing because you've got them for longer.

"And he just used the same ideas and methods right through his managerial career because it worked at St Mirren, so why change it?"
