Clyne eager for Under-21 chance

9 May 2013 13:22

Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne is keen to gain vital experience by featuring in June's Under-21 European Championships with England.

The 22-year-old, who has previously won six caps for Stuart Pearce's side, is vying for a place in the squad which will travel to Israel to take part in the tournament.

And Clyne believes the know-how gained at international level can help push him on to greater things domestically.

"It’s a big opportunity for me to play in a tournament such as the Under-21s, lots of players have done well after going to that tournament and hopefully I can do the same if I’m picked," he said.

"It’s a lot of football, but it gives me a chance to improve and get some experience at international level."

England are hot favourites for the competition having kept clean sheets in nine consecutive wins in the build up, and Clyne has set his sights on securing the first trophy of his short career.

"I think we’re unbeaten in nine and haven’t conceded either. That’s quality," he added. "We’re confident going into the tournament and hopefully we can do England proud and win it.

"That would be great. Throughout my career I want to be the one winning trophies and hopefully if I progress well and the team does well we can win it."

The former Crystal Palace defender has made 32 Premier League appearances since moving to St Mary's Stadium in July 2012.
