Klopp, Mourinho, Moyes: Ferguson´s potential replacements

8 May 2013 13:37

With the news that Alex Ferguson is to retire as manager of Manchester United, the club will start the unenviable task of replacing him.

Ferguson announced he will take on a role as director and ambassador at United after a glittering career, including 26 years in charge of United in which he won 38 trophies.

The question of who could replace Ferguson has always been a big talking point, so who are the main contenders to continue the Scot's legacy?

David Moyes - Everton

With Moyes' contract coming to an end the Scot has been installed as clear favourite for the United job, and has insisted he is in no rush to extend his deal at Goodison Park, despite time quickly running out.

Odds: 1/4 (bet365)

What he has said: "I've been in discussions with the chairman for quite a few months. We've had three or four meetings and every one nudges things along a little bit further. Part of the discussion is about what the investment is. That's part of the talks that are ongoing at this present time."

Jose Mourinho - Real Madrid

Mourinho's future has not been far from the news in the past weeks and looks certain to depart the Bernabeu and recently gave a strong hint he would leave the Spanish capital in the summer and return to England, although Chelsea are reportedly also keen to bring the Portuguese back to Stamford Bridge.

Odds: 11/4 (bet365)

What he has said: "Maybe not. I want to be where people love me to be," when asked if he would remain at Madrid.

"I'm loved by a media (in England) that treats me in a fair way, criticising me when I have [to be] and giving me credit when I deserve it. I know I am loved by some clubs, especially one and in Spain the situation is a bit different because some people hate me."

Juergen Klopp - Borussia Dortmund

The German has gained many suitors after establishing a classy Dortmund side that won the Bundesliga in 2012 and will contest the final of the 2013 UEFA Champions League. And while he maintains that Germany is the "paradise" of football he has admitted he would like to manage in England.

Odds: 16/1 (bet365)

What he has said: "We have the most competitive and attractive league in Europe.

"Of course, England may be close to this. But that I am still dreaming about managing in England, this issue is over. That was something I was after when I started being a manager in the game."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - Molde

The former United striker is an outside bet for the job but he has previously spoke of his desire to take the job, after guiding Molde to consecutive titles in Norway.

Odds: 20/1 (bet365)

What he has said: "I’ll have to get through hard times before I think about that one. I’m always going to be a Man United supporter, you cut me up I’ll bleed red.

"Any kid’s dream is to play at Man United if you have a Man United heart. When you get too old to play, the next best thing is to be the manager."

Ryan Giggs - Manchester United

Giggs is synonymous with the success Ferguson has brought to United, including 13 league titles. He appears to be a long-shot to take the job, however, with his playing days yet to draw to a close.

Odds: 50/1 (bet365)

What they have said: "He's looking at that United job for himself, Giggsy. He's got top potential," former team-mate Solskjaer has claimed.

Paul Scholes commented: "People have talked about Mourinho. Whether they are British or foreign, you just want the best man for the job. I could see Ryan Giggs becoming manager."
